I walk a lot as I have two Springer Spaniels, and live in a very rural area. I recently took a side track I don't often take on the dog walks I go on near my house. I wandered into what must have been a large garden for a large house. Strange exotic trees ( for England), very over grown, quarry tiles underfoot in some places, a room in a broken down wall. I wandered along what must have been deer trails, found a beautiful waterfall. All lovely, but nothing too special near me.

And then I came to a clearing, cleared by nature. Massive 50/60 foot pines had been ripped apart, their tops seem to have been twisted off, you could see the twisting of the wood and bark in things to high for humans to have even reached. The destruction was awe inspiring, almost majestic. There were also signs that some had been struck by lightning.

The beauty came at nightfall, I had wandered around for a bit too long and the sky was cloudless. The Milky way in all its glory(we were shielded from all streetlights etc) appeared as night fell, so me and the dogs laid down on the ground in this 'clearing' and looked at the stars.

The last time I saw a sky this good was in the Outer Hebrides, I never thought I would see it this close to my home.

So the raw natural power of the ripped apart trees framed the majesty of the stars in a silence only interrupted by the sound of night owls and the smell of pine and forest herbs. I would have spent the night there, but the dogs wanted food.

Oh, I won't PM you but my dog names are Uisge ( pronounced ooshhga, it means water in gaelic) and Ellie
