The UK can and will stand on its own. As an American, I strongly support them as our closest ally and IMHO they will remain so. If I were from the UK, I'd actually be offended by this question. We're friendly nations, we need each other, but we're both independent. Personally, I'm wondering if we shouldn't do something similar to Britex here ... decentralize.

I can't answer that, sorry, I'm an American and have no real feel for that entire situation. All I'm saying is the UK has always been our ally and should remain so. I don't think Britain wants to become a State in the USA, anymore than we wanted to be a British colony. I'm more a supporter of nation states, rather than a one world, globalized government type. The closer the government is to the people it serves, the better, I think.

It makes no sense for the United States of America to include European countries. Hawaii doesn't really make much sense outside of a permanent naval and military outpost. It doesn't make much sense for the UK to exist, really. Split them up into their individual nations. It doesn't matter in practice outside of trade regulations and such. With globalism and the internet, the world is effectively one big supercountry for all intents and purposes. I am American, but think the world may be a better place if all countries had a strong national pride and sense of isolationism like the Japanese.

I'm really confused with the idea that it "seems like a natural fit". Just because none of the states have seceded the union doesn't mean we function seamlessly or as a strong whole. Have you been to California? Or even seen how California laws differ from the rest of the country? The UK existed before the EU. So, it's not like the UK has fallen away from something it has always been a part of. It's more like a divorce. It existed independently before and now it's going to go through the stages of divorce - deciding to leave, actually leaving, finding yourself, establishing new grounds, etc.

Let's see what happens next.

They speak English, we're big trade partners, and they'd finally get their own NFL team instead of borrowing a couple of ours for one game every season.
