My thought exactly. Consider the source. It sounds too sane to be true. Just because it caters to one's cognitive bias does not mean it is correct.

The arch supporter of affirmative action of the Supreme Court is expected to be Justice Sonia Sotomayor, a child of Puerto Rican immigrants who won acceptance and a full scholarship to Princeton based at least partially on affirmative action. In Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, she stated: “Race matters because of the slights, the snickers, the silent judgments that reinforce that most crippling of thoughts: `I do not belong here.’”

Without affirmative action, no one will have a logical reason to doubt you belong there. Affirmative action says, "You don't belong here, and there's no way you could have never made it here on your own, but let's pretend you earned it." I can't think of a greater insult...

Shouldn't she have to recuse herself then? In fairness, so should Clarence Thomas.

`I do not belong here.’

In her case, truer words were never spoken. There has never been an associate justice so unqualified to sit on the Supreme Court.

They don't. They have their own countries.

For those who don't remember what affirmative action started, it was to be in force for an indeterminate time as it was just tacked on by the SCOUS to the civil rights amendment (1964) that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Affirmative action was to make up for past discrimination. Funny, because affirmative action is actually discrimination against whites which the civil rights act just outlawed. But I guess if you're SCOUS, you do what ever you feel like.

Well to be fair it really did need to be done at the time...Just like we needed the tired hungry and poor(we needed population desperately). AND we need police reform and an understanding police brutality and the drug war while affecting whites as well have disportionaly affected blacks.

In other words we need less NAACP(or none at all) and more ACLU.

Thing is times fucking change. but now we need to restrict immigration and end affirmative action. (so we can incoporate the better parts of socialism into our society) dont take peoples guns

HOWEVER, we also need realistic sex ed taught in schools, the drug war needs to end, nafta should be repealed(those last 2 helped destabilize south america in hopes of cheap farm/construction labor) and we need to enter the god damn 21st century.

liberals and conservatives both have good points its just corporations and internatinal banks make a big show of change while gridlocking both at key points for their own interests.

Side note if affirmative action or subisidies should apply for anyone...its should STILL be native americans suprise fucking suprise. They are STILL the most marganizled group but good luck getting liberals to rally around that point and not fucking team mascots.

Most civic organizations outlive their own usefulness. The NAACP had a perfectly legit reason to exist originally because they were fighting against violence being done to blacks. Hell, the Klan was originally created as a support organization for Civil War vets and their families. At some point though, the battle is won, but the organizations have people in charge who want to retain their political or social clout or just plain old money.

It will, as long as we're saddled with Obama and company.

Title is not consistent with the article.

The Supreme Court is on the verge of hearing a case with the potential to strike down Texas' particular holistic (subjective) admissions criteria--which score for race--and under which "admissions officials cannot define what role race played in any specific admission that could advance the 'educational benefits of diversity' for all students."

While the title is definitely misleading, winning a case on this scale would set a precedent for the same case to be made in other states and be a lot easier to win with the burden falling on those appealing it.

If it is found the school system was wrong, and the ruling is said to apply narrowly (as similar cases have been in recent history) it could simply mean colleges must show the minority applicant contributes to a diverse campus environment; a minor bit of paperwork. If ruled as broadly as is reasonably likely, it could force a reshuffling of the systems colleges across the country use to show preferences to non-Asian minorities. But I don't doubt they will find a way.

This! shame this is so far down. I had to trudge through a lot of twats unironically providing evidence why people think we need affirmative action just to find someone who actually knows what they're talking about. Thanks dude

UT definitely discriminates based on race. Legitimately the dumbest chick I've ever met in my life went there because she was some form of beaner. She had blonde hair and blue eyes as well but had some weird ancestry and got in. It just discredits others accomplishments by doing that as UT is a good school
