This makes me wonder, who do most fans consider to be our rival? Do we even have one?

My opinion is that the Caps were our rivals when we were both in the SE but now I'm not so sure. Montreal might be the closest we have. Maybe the Rangers.

That's a really good question. I agree that the Caps were probably our real rival during the Southeast days, but we see them so rarely now that we don't have that same bad blood.

Personally, I have much more rival-like hatred for Boston than for Montreal or New York. At the risk of being overly dismissive, the Canadiens and Rangers just don't scare me like Boston does (or maybe did, prior to this offseason). Although I'm admittedly still pissed about 2011, which may be a contributing factor. But I suspect that because we're a [insert derogatory description here: young/Sunbelt/small market], they don't really pay as any mind. So it's tough to say.

I have nothing against Montreal or NYR really. The main excitement behind beating Montreal this year was revenge for the sweep in 2014 and I really, really wanted it to be us that denied Marty a chance at the cup. I agree with you about Boston though, dunno why I forgot to list them. Like you said, it's a one-sided rivalry though. They definitely don't consider us rivals. Many Montreal or NYR fans probably do after this season though.

Hopefully our team will be successful for years to come and legit rivalries will follow.
