People who aren't sexist already know this.

Remember: Only men can be sexist. Just like only white people can be racist.

I think everyone knows it, the feminists just deny it.

If we didn't collect evidence about things that "everybody already knows" perhaps we'd not know about the earth going round the sun and so on.

When people happen to be right about what "everyone knows" don't pat yourself on the back too hard -- we've got a pretty terrible track record.

Of course. Unfortunately if one were to believe the vast majority of popular media, the earth, in this analogy, is still flat.

It's like that study from awhile back that showed when men treat women like they do other men, women view it as sexism. They only view themselves as being treated "equally" by men when men treat them better than they do other men.

Women tend to be cunts when online. I wouldn't be surprised if women were twice as harassing.

That's because they feel safe to act out behind the screen in a way they usually can't get away with in person.
My takeaway is that they WILL do it in person if they feel safe or entitled enough, and that they are in that mental state even when we are not observing the overt behavior.

There's a website called "Get off my internets" which is just a community of women bitching about and harassing other, better, women.

Yeah but men can't be victims because they're oppressors.

Some women takes these things so personally and blame men for for everything going wrong with them. They're called feminist.

I would guess that the different types of harassment changes how it's perceived quite significantly. I mean, I've had people tell me to kill myself and called a faggot online. But it was on 4chan, where that's basically a form of greeting. And I've been called rude names and so on in the Youtube comments, but I ignored it because it was the Youtube comments. And I've been the target of ad hominem attacks in online debates before, which was great because that means I won that discussion. If you asked me if I had ever been harassed online, I would probably say "no, not really". But if they had given me this survey, I would have said yes to one or two of the first 3 categories depending on how the question was phrased. But on the other hand, stalking or sexual harassment are very clear cases of harassment that most people would immediately identify as such. If someone had stalked me online or started sending me dick pics twice a week, you better believe I'd say I had been harassed.

The study shows that men and women are harassed about the same amount in total, but the results do indicate different rates of different kinds of harassment.

I agree with this. I do believe the type of harassment plays a part in how a person reacts. I'm technically "harrassed" on the Internet frequent enough, but it's never bothered me enough for me to call it "harassment". If someone we're stalking me or threatening rape, Id probably be a little more disturbed. For whatever reason, a rape threat scares me even more than death threat.

I would love to see further research into this -- or maybe there already is and I need to find it. My own personal experiences would suggest that women tend to react more emotionally to words than men; this, coupled with the type of harrassment they tend to recieve, could explain the results in the article.

Well, it's simple really. When a man is insulted, most of the time, he will think that it's because something we said or did. Now, our brains have this self defense mechanism where we try to justify being shitty by shifting the blame. Mental gymnastics can go really far, some serial murderers actually believe everything they have done is justified. Unfortunately, women are less likely to realize they are doing this. Men also fall for this sometimes but the percentage is smaller.

That was the conclusion of my senior thesis. Women (in video games) report being harassed in far greater numbers, but trolling/harassing, unless specifically directed, is more like a shit fountain. Those who react more are more likely to be re-targeted.

For the record, I'm a gal.
