Looks like Bitcoin arrived just in time to serve as a digital cash that the entire world population can use in replace of state issued cash. I'm sure there will be competing cryptocurrencies, but the idea is out there now and none of us need banks or states to obtain and use it. Cryptocurrencies could also spell the end for banks in general. If you don't need an intermediary to store or transfer your wealth, then the banks will have less influence over governance and the economy.

Yeah, I can see people accepting any number of cryptocurrencies. I picture going downtown and seeing vendors with logos on their storefront that represent the currencies they accept.

The only reason cash is worth anything is because we all agree that it is.

And that applies to gold and silver as well but the important part they all play is they can be held (tangibly) and don't leave a trail of information about where they've been. Discretion in how money moves is not the same as covering the tracks of illegal dealings. We should always have a means to keep a transaction private whether it is legal or not.

And, why do numbers on a screen have any value assigned to them either? All money, physical or conceptual is worth only what we artificially value it at based on arbitrary mutual agreements.

Its faith in its value, that's all money is and ever has been! How is electronic currency any different?

I'm reminded of the Margharitaville episode of South Park. It's poinient... And hilarious, worth a watch

I have four bottles of whiskey I'd be willing to trade for those 4 egg laying chickens. This is the cashless future.

Cash is King.

It will never disappear. When push comes to shove, and shit goes south, it's what people rely on, and its been that way for millennia. No amount of lobbying by the powers that be that wish to control everything you are, and do, will change that.

The black market for one, which is a surprisingly large economic sector, deals almost exclusively in cash. I'm not saying that's a good thing, but some rocks are too hard to move.
