Gitlab is currently hosted on Microsoft's Azure and will be migrating to Google Cloud, soon. Bitbucket is a step in the right direction; they host on their own servers, so you are not hosted in a AWS/Microsoft/Google environment.

A truly free alternative for 3rd party Git hosting, that carries FOSS principles is notabug.org

Another contribution to the free software list: DD-WRT - Router firmware powered by Linux (and runs on a lot of cheap routers!)
