Last night, my boyfriend and I and our roommates (the guy that owned the house and his girlfriend that lives with us) were celebrating Cinco de Mayo a day early (well, it became Cinco de Mayo in the middle of our celebrating) since none of us were going to be able to actually celebrate it today, and the topic of ghosts came up amidst the festivities. We had a fairly normal conversation about the various things people see, and the real life, much less exciting things they turn out to be (like "I'm seeing things out of the corner of my eyes!" is just your mind playing tricks on you in a new environment usually,) and my boyfriend said something weird had happened to him, and it was probably just a hallucination. When we presses him for the juicy details, this is what he told us.
"It was a few years ago, when I was on a really long week. It was the one time I worked for 90 hours in one week." (He's a chef, by the way, and at the time he was working at a convention center during hockey season, where there was a game, or some other kind of event they had to cater going on in the center almost every single day of the month. It took him about an hour to drive to work every day, too, and an hour back home.) "I used to dream about work a lot, and there would always be this one server who would show up in my dreams. She was the most average white girl server you can imagine, so I never knew whether she was a real person I would see getting orders from the kitchen, or if she was just the perfect collection of all the things I knew about servers. In my dreams, she would complain about work, but never really like she didn't like being there, just the general complaining that happens at any place anyone has a job. It was just small talk.
"Any way, I was working the 90 hour week, and one of the days I was walking out to my car, and I passed a group of servers who were hanging around one of their cars smoking cigarettes and talking. There were four of them, and all of them but one had their backs turned to me. As I got closer, one of them turned and smiled and waved at me, and I smiled back. It was the server that had been showing up in my dreams. 'So she is a real person I've seen,' I thought, and as I passed them, I turned around to just confirm what I had seen. There were only three servers standing there, not four. The server from my dreams wasn't there."
