Ever used a belt on someone?
Pretty effective for taking out knives and other short range weapons.
Option of using the buckle or the bend depending on the situation.
Good for restraint or choking.
Always remember to wear a belt. Fucking useful tool.
*Edit.
Belt off, buckle and tip in the hand using the bend for striking. Strike at the knife hand for a really effective disarm. The belt can deliver multiple hits and remove a knife or other weapon from the attackers hands.
Lash at the face, eyes, to get advantage. The sound of a doubled belt can sometime be more effective then the damage.
Use a stiff belt edge on, against the forearms, to remove muscle energy.
Put the end through the buckle and hold as a loop to snare limbs or head. Pull tight for an effective self tightening restraining strap.
Wrap the belt around your fist so save your skin when putting in hits to a subdued attacker.
There are many more ways to be effective with a belt.

Holy crap, this is a thing! I never thought belts could be useful in defense. Thanks for the tip!

I have had the misfortune to HAVE to have used my belt a few times and it has helped me out.
Just being able to remember to use it is a training thing. You might be in shit street and start looking for a stick or stone, but you have an effective weapon around your waist.
It's a great leveler if you have to deal with an aggressive dog. Dogs normally won't attack if you have a visible weapon. Some dogs don't obey that rule, so a belt is good for striking and then restraining (choking out) the dog.
Would kinda like to tell you about my experiences but I feel that many people here won't enjoy what I have had to do to some people and animals that were aggressive.

If you are fighting knife vs belt.. your best option is to run and call for help.

How likely is it for you to hit their small hand. Shouldn't u just go for the face?

What I always have with me is:

Keys You want the keychain of your keys to be solid and stick like so it can support your fist, then you want to jut out the keys from in between your fingers as to make a boxing iron.

Skateboard To use as a shield or as an extension of your arm when striking. Especially holding both trucks while thrusting the tip forwards does much damage, but you can also hold one and try to sidestrike the chest or legs. Swinging a skateboard is slow, so you best use it as a shield until you see an opening.

Often times I'll carry an army knife as well, I mainly use it for the Philips / Flathead screwdrivers and the beer opener. Obviously an 8cm locked blade counts as a weapon and it has a conveniently sharpened tip.

I second the keys idea! Add a solid beast of a beer opener keyring on.

What about heavy boots? Kicking in the knee can cripple the assailant.

Hm, sometimes you forget the very simple things.

Steel toe work boots work great.

I've studied martial arts. This is something that people that have never fought always brings up. Fights aren't like movies. It's not like he's going to do a kick to the knee, and then the 'bad guy' is going to collapse, and cry. If he isn't trained he's just going to kick the knee, and it will brush off the side. I've been kicked in the knee before, it's not a magic touch of death touch.

so you're saying kicks are ineffective in a fight?

Um. If they are trained in fighting arts they could call it s day

It is if you kick sideways! Or heel first with enough force. People can kick very hard.

I've taught martial arts before, and here are my tips for your particular situation:

  • GET IN SHAPE. Size, strength, and stamina matters in any self-defense situation. Being strong will automatically increase your abilities to fight, regardless of knowledge.

  • Carry around a sturdy handbag, or purse. Keep your phone, and important things inside your pockets, and have a purse with relatively heavy objects inside that won't be considered a weapon. Then if you're attacked, kick your attacker away with your foot, or push them off, and use your purse like a flail. Whack them on the side of the head, or if you want just hold the entire purse, and use it to smash their nose in.

  • A handful of small denomination coins. Just keep them in your pocket. If someone attacks you, throw all of these coins, as hard as you can at their face, and flee.

  • An umbrella is still a good weapon. Just use it like a regular, old stick. Your umbrella will break but it will hurt them. Smash them up, until your rain protector is in two pieces.

  • There are simple, weaponless attacks you can do too. Target for example the groin, eyes, and the ears. Front kick to the groin, thrust your fingers into the eyes, or with a cupped hand strike over the ear. Of course once you do these, and you see they're stunned, run away. It's not magic. It's a surprise attack, a one-use move. Your main objective in all situations is to escape.

  • Verbalize. Tell them in a loud assertive voice that you don't want trouble, and that they should leave you alone. Legally this will help you because if there are witnesses they will frame you as the victim, who didn't want to be harmed.

  • Most importantly, You should take some martial arts classes. These things I listed are okay, but to be able to defend yourself properly you need training. I know that they have martial arts in Sweden, so find a school, and learn. If you really, really cannot do this, then buy the Gracie Combatives DVD set, and watch, and use them with a partner.

I can't post an Amazon link, so here in the intro on YouTube.

You can find them for sale by "Googling it." It looks pricey, but Gracie Combatives will teach you the very basics of Jiu Jitsu. This is the best program I've run across. I highly recommend it for beginners.

Thanks a lot for the tips! I think taking part in some sort of IRL training (perhaps some martial arts / self defense classes) would help a ton.

You boys have baseball? Baseball bats, just keep a ball in your back pocket and say you just wanted to play.

Unfortunately baseball or cricket is virtually non-existent here. We do have ice hockey though!

I was hoping it'd be a link to Raphael vs Casey Jones. It's too old for me to remember whether the quote matched.

There's already kancho in Japan, but it's unarmed. Or is it, if it's done by hands?

If you practice kegels enough, it can also work as a projectile.

pocket sand.

but on a more serious note, I am seeing a lot of people saying steel toed boots. I've known quite a few people that feel confident about them but I just can't agree.

I was pretty scrappy in my youth and being nimble on my feet helped me far more than any pair of clunky boots would have.

I know you know this, but you are the weapon. Train. Fight. Experience and fitness will help you far more than anything listed here.

Wrap your dirty underwear around a fist. Nobody wants to be punched in the nose by dirty underwear.
